For over 60 years, the DSO has held an annual Young Artists Audition for area high-school musicians, and provided the winner with the extraordinary opportunity to perform as soloist on a DSO subscription concert. The 2018 YAA winner will be celebrated on the DSO’s March concert, along with Ottorino Respighi’s brilliant musical tribute to ancient and modern Rome, his 1928 tone poem Feste Romane (“Roman Festivals”). As the final contribution to a trilogy that includes Fountains of Rome and Pines of Rome, the four movements of Respighi’s exquisitely orchestrated Feste Romane vividly describe a gladiators’ battle, a Christian Jubilee, an October harvest, and a raucous Epiphany celebration in the great Italian capital.
