Two German masters of the Early Romantic Era – Carl Maria von Weber and Robert Schumann – are the focus of the DuPage Symphony's second subscription concert. Weber's hauntingly beautiful and dramatically stirring Overture to the opera Der Freischütz is followed by his exhilarating, virtuosic Clarinet Concerto No. 2 in E-flat Major. Schumann's Symphony No. 3, the so-called Rhenish, grounded in the same key as the concerto, concludes the program. This rhythmically exhilarating, five-movement symphony echoes certain features of both the third and the sixth symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven.
Clarinetist Yoohan Kim is the featured soloist in the Weber. Recognized as a young artist of uncommon musical depth and versatility, Kim is a winner of the 2016 Concert Artists Guild International Competition – and the first solo clarinetist to win the CAG competition in nearly 30 years, following in the footsteps of the acclaimed artist David Shifrin
