Guest lecture by Prof. Bultmann (University of Erfurt, Germany)
A free presentation and discussion titled "Can Muslim Preacher Fethullah Gülen be a Voice in Interreligious Dialogue?" will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, in Smith Hall at Old Main. The presenter is Professor Christoph Bultmann of Universität Erfurt, Germany. In Turkish politics, Fethullah Gülen is a most controversial figure whose ideas and initiatives are aggressively rejected by the present AKP government. Gülen makes an interpretation of Islam accessible for which he refers to key concepts of Sufism and offers reflections on the Qur'an in commentaries on selected verses. Since Gülen also advocates the idea of interreligious dialogue and encourages his followers to develop suitable forms of such dialogue, this presentation and discussion will be an attempt to look at his teachings from a Christian theological perspective and with a special emphasis on the reception of qur'anic texts. The discussion is supported by Center for Global Education, German language program, Cultural Events and the Office of Ministry and Service.
