Recording artist/vocalist/songwriter Laury Shelley puts her own indelible stamp on every song she sings. Whether it's jazz, pop, rock or soul, Shelley has a voice that acts as its own instrument and she's been called a "musician's musician." Whether performing at Carnegie Hall with Oscar and Grammy-winning composer Michel Legrand, or at New York City's Metropolitan Room and Chicago's Jazz Showcase in more intimate solo club concerts, Shelley brings passion to everything she sings. WGN Chicago radio host Rick Kogan enthusiastically called her "the real deal."
A career-defining moment occurred when Shelley asked five-time Grammy and three-time Oscar-winning composer Michel Legrand, who was performing at Chicago's famous night spot Mr. Kelly's, if she could sing for him. Legrand, whose brilliant scores range from movies such as "Brian's Song," "The Thomas Crown Affair" and the Academy Award-winning score for Barbra Streisand's "Yentl," said "yes." He was so astounded by what he heard that for the next five and a half years, Shelley lived the dream, performing as Legrand's soloist.
She sang at the world's most prestigious concert venues, including, The Sahara Hotel in Las Vegas, Red Rocks Amphitheater in Denver, Miami's Stars Under The Stars Concert Series at Marine Stadium and New York's The Westbury Theatre, as well as concert halls in Montreal, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Shelley shared stages with many musical icons, such as Tony Bennett, Buddy Rich, Cleo Laine and John Dankworth, while performing and recording with jazz greats Phil Woods, Ron Carter, Grady Tate, Randy Brecker and Joe Beck.
Shelley reunited with Legrand at The Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis on his 2011-2012 U.S. tour and is featured in a duet of the Academy Award-nominated song "Pieces of Dreams" on the recordings "Michel Legrand and Friends" She is also the recently released CD "Michel Legrand The RCA Years" that includes musical luminaries Lena Horne and Jack Jones.
Working on her 2016 album, she which will feature her own songs of pop, rock and soul. The project is kicked off with her electrifying funk-tinged single of Legrand/Bergman's "The Windmills of Your Mind," an arrangement by Shelley and producer Vijay Tellis-Nayak. Her 2011 release "Pieces of Dreams" received critical acclaim, international airplay and accolades that included being named Artist of the Month by WFLM Chicago's Smooth 87.7FM.
