Event Details:
Alyssa Allgood cabaret
Chicago-based jazz vocalist Alyssa Allgood has been recognized as an artist who "impressively sings, scats and writes original lyrics" (DownBeat Magazine). Her voice is "radiant...strong and coolly expressive. She sings with a maturity marked by restraint and nuance" (Neil Tesser, Grammy Award-winning writer and critic). Alyssa's debut album, "Out of the Blue", reimagines the classic Blue Note Records era with original arrangements and lyrics. The album received wide critical acclaim and was hailed as a "Best Release of 2016" by The Huffington Post, All About Jazz, Jazz History Online, The L.A. Jazz Scene and a "Best Debut Release of 2016" by The New York City Jazz Record. Critics consistently praised Alyssa’s instrumental approach and accomplished scat and vocalese singing. Alyssa performed to a standing room only crowd at the 2016 Chicago Jazz Festival. She has also appeared at The Green Mill, The Jazz Showcase, Fitzgerald's Nightclub, Merriman's Playhouse, The Whiskey Lounge and as a special guest with groups at The Taste of Chicago and Andy's Jazz Club. Alyssa headlined the 2016 Ottawa 2 Rivers Wine Fest, which featured a lineup of Chicago's jazz women. She actively participates in jazz competitions around the world, and was recently named a Top 15 Finalist in the 2016 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, a 2016 Jazz Fellow through the Luminarts Cultural Organization in Chicago and second place winner in the 2016 Mid-Atlantic Jazz Voice Competition. She placed as a Top 10 semifinalist in the 2015 Shure Montreux Jazz Voice Competition; where she competed live in Switzerland for a jury presided by jazz legend Al Jarreau. She currently works as the Jazz and Choral Programs Coordinator at Midwest Young Artists Conservatory, where she also teaches music theory and private voice lessons. She will be directing their first Chicago Vocal Jazz Workshop summer program in July 2017. Alyssa fell in love with jazz at age 12, when she first attended the Janice Borla Vocal Jazz Camp. She attended the camp for the next eight summers and worked closely with vocal jazz greats Peter Eldridge, Jay Clayton, Rosana Eckert and Madeline Eastman. Alyssa completed her Bachelor of Arts in Jazz Studies from North Central College in Naperville, IL, where she won the coveted Downbeat Magazine Student Music Award for Best Collegiate Vocal Jazz Soloist in 2014.
