North Central College will host James Falzone, clarinetist, composer and acclaimed member of Chicago's jazz scene, for a presentation at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, in the College's Madden Theatre at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave. Titled "The Moment Just Beyond: Improvisation as a Way of Being," his live performance and discussion are free and open to the campus and local community with interests in all academic areas or in unique approaches to looking at life. Falzone's talk will help us think about improvisation not only as something artists do but also as a way of organizing thinking that touches upon our daily living, social justice, ethics issues and pedagogy.
The hope is to see improvisation as an organizing agent or a way of being, more than just an artistic technique.
He will perform live, using video and audio examples to amplify his ideas and will offer a Q&A time.
Falzone is a veteran contemporary music lecturer and clinician, longtime Director of Music for Grace Chicago Church and an award-winning composer who has been commissioned by chamber ensembles, choirs and symphony orchestras around the globe. Currently on the faculty at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, he spent several years as a member of North Central's music faculty, sharing his expertise in the arts and across multiple disciplines.
