The sounds of Spain swirl through the air as the percussive beat of the flamenco dancer’s feet punctuate the music. The ascension of the mythological Firebird is accompanied by the staccato rhythms of tap dancing. And the dreamscape of sultry Arabian Nights combine both forms of percussive dance to create a new experience for this classic work.
The concert begins with the orchestra performing Roberto Sierra’s Fandangos performed with flamenco dancers from Clinard Dance Theatre. The first half continues with tap dance virtuoso Cartier Williams joining the orchestra for a fresh take on Stravinsky’s The Firebird: Suite, and all of the dancers unite for a joyful encore on Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances. Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade showcases the orchestra as this epic evening of percussive dance and music concludes as it started, with the beautiful sounds of the orchestra.
