North Central College is hosting the 11th annual Midwest Conference on Chinese Thought May 1-2 featuring a keynote at 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 1, in Fireside Lounge of the Harold and Eva White Activities Center, 325 E. Benton Ave. The conference is dedicated to fostering dialogue and interaction between scholars and students working on Chinese thought across different disciplines and through a variety of approaches. The keynote address is titled "Reading the Peking University Han Laozi Manuscript from the Perspective of Western Manuscript Studies and the New Philology" and will be delivered by Donald Harper, a professor in the Department of East Asian Languages & Civilizations at the University of Chicago. Harper is author of "Early Chinese Medical Literature," a collection of translations of ancient manuscripts. His research and teaching interests lie primarily in early Chinese civilization, focusing on philosophy, religion, and history of science.
