Faculty from North Central College's political science department will discuss timely issues during its winter term Topics in Politics (TIP) Talk March 3. The TIP Talk is free and open to the public and will be held from 12:10 to 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 3 in North Central College's theatre at Meiley-Swallow Hall, 31 S. Ellsworth St. The TIP Talks are modeled on the TED Talk concept and feature short presentations on current political topics. Speakers for the March 3 TIP Talk are: Stephen Maynard Caliendo, professor of political science and chair of the division of human thought and behavior, who will discuss the politics of intellectual property in contemporary popular music; Steve Macek, professor of speech communication and coordinator of urban and suburban studies, who will discuss the resurgence of the anti-capitalist and anti-austerity electoral left in Europe; William Muck, associate professor and chair of political science/sociology and anthropology and coordinator of global studies, who will reflect on Charlie Hebdo and blasphemy in an era of globalization; and Abigaile VanHorn, adjunct assistant professor of political science, who will discuss "pot politics" and the debate about legalization.
