Author James Green will deliver the free lecture, "Chicago 1886: The Haymarket Labor Events" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22 in North Central College's Meiley-Swallow Hall, 31 S. Ellsworth St. Green is professor of history and labor studies at the University of Massachusetts/Boston, where he directs the M.A. program in public history. He is author of the 2006 book “Death in the Haymarket: A Story of Chicago, the First Labor Movement and the Bombing that Divided Gilded Age America.” He is co-author of “Boston’s Workers: A Labor History” (1979) and “Commonwealth of Toil: Chapters in the History of Massachusetts Workers and their Unions” (1996). He has lectured as a 1998 Fulbright Senior Fellow in Italy, Germany and France and is currently writing a new history of the West Virginia mine wars of the early 20th century for Grove Atlantic Press. The book has been optioned by WGBH as the basis of a documentary for the PBS series “The American Experience.” The lecture is part of the College's Cultural Events program.
