"A Walk In My Autism" presentation by Little Friends
Little Friends will host the free community presentation "A Walk in My Autism" at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, in North Central College's Madden Theatre at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave. The incidence of Autism Spectrum Disorders is on the rise and it is now estimated that one in every 50 children in the United States will be diagnosed on the spectrum. Through interactive scenarios, this presentation will help parents and professionals experience what it is like to walk in the footsteps of individuals who live with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Attendees will also look at different visual strategies that help provide the concrete, predictable structure that is needed by these learners. Based on the book, "Walk Awhile in My Autism," by Nan Negri and Kate McGinnity, the presentation will give basic information to siblings, grandparents, and other extended family members, teachers, support and ancillary staff and classmates. All are welcome, but because of limited seating, reservations are required. Individuals who plan to attend are asked to RSVP by calling Little Friends at 630-355-6533. Presenter Mary Crissman is Senior Autism Consultant/Trainer for the Little Friends Center for Autism. She’s been in the field since the early 1980s and served as the Lifeskills Center for Children with Autism (LTCCA) director for 15 years. Crissman specializes in providing training to children with autism and their parents. She also has extensive experience in staff training and has presented at several state and national conferences. Crissman also has extensive training in PECS, Discrete Trial, TEACCH, and in teaching children to function in the community.
