Hysteria (2011)
This film is a British romantic comedy starring Maggie Gyllenhaal and Rubert Everett. Set in the Victorian era, the film shows how the medical field diagnosed women with a variety of emotional, physical, and mental issues as having the disease Hysteria. Symptoms included faintness, nervousness, sexual desire, heavy menstruation, insomnia, loss of appetite, and irritability. The medical treatment of hysteria led to the invention of the electric vibrator. This film is offered as a socio-historical resource for GWS 100.1 students. Open and free to the public.
