British composers are showcased in the DuPage Symphony Orchestra's second concert in the "Great Expectations" series, bringing great music, exciting performances and extraordinary soloists to the stage. William Walton's spirited "Portsmouth Point Overture," revealing the conspicuous influence of American jazz, provides a fitting introduction for Ralph Vaughan Williams' touching "Songs of Travel"--skillful settings of nine poems by Robert Louis Stevenson sung by Chicagoland favorite Jeffrey Ray. Sir Edward Elgar's justly famous "Enigma Variations," with its affectionate musical portrayals of 14 of the composer's closest friends, concludes this colorful and appealing program.
