Melville's subtitle to his classic "Bartleby the Schrivener" is the story of Wall Street. "This serves as classic misdirection. When the lowliest and the meekest of clerks in an irrelevant legal office suddenly decides not to perform a simple task he had been ordered to accomplish, the world of his boss is turned upside down.
