"The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" by Rebecca Skloot examines the life and "immortal cells" of Henrietta Lacks, a poor black woman who died of cervical cancer in 1951. Her cells, taken without her permission, became one of the most important tools in medicine and lead to important advances such as in vitro fertilization, cloning and gene mapping.
